Prof. Gerard M O'Donoghue MCh FRCS

Gerard O'Donoghue

Consultant Otolaryngologist; and Vice President of The Ear Foundation.
Queen's Medical Centre University Hospital, Nottingham, UK

In the late 1980s, Professor O'Donoghue's postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco stimulated his interest in cochlear implants.

Following his appointment in Nottingham in 1988, he was instrumental in establishing The Ear Foundation with a view to raising sufficient funds to carry out the first cochlear implant operations, and then persuading the National Health Service to take on responsibiltiy for this invaluable service. He has published extensively in the field of inner ear disorders and skull base surgery, and has held visiting Professorships at institutions around the globe.

Three years ago, Professor O'Donoghue devised a new method of carrying out the cochlear implant operation through a minimal access 'key hole' technique, using a 2 centimetre incision. This technique has been widely adopted internationally as the gold standard for paediatric cochlear implantation.
