Prof. Adrian Davis BSc, MSc, PhD, FFPHM, FSS
Director of the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme for England; and Director MRC Hearing and Communication Group, Manchester University
Manchester, UK
Adrian has published extensively in peer reviewed journals and is the author of several books and book chapters. His earlier work concentrated on the epidemiology of hearing impairments in adults and children. More recently he has been involved in the evaluation of health technology and services for hearing impaired and deaf people. He has worked with the MRC for 25 years at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research before moving to Manchester University. He worked as a lecturer in community medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital. Adrian has been the Principal Investigator in several national studies concerned with hearing, tinnitus, balance and rhinology in both adults and children.
He is Director of the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) for England and his research and advocacy (with John Bamford) was one of the main reasons for getting government approval and funding to implement a national newborn hearing screen for all babies born in the UK. He also directs the evaluation of Modernising Hearing Aid Services programme (MHAS) which has both adult and paediatric arms and leads the training of hearing aid centre staff embarking on modernisation. The DH work is complemented by work with the DfES NHSP Early Excellence Children’s Centre Initiatives which is part of the SureStart programme.
Adrian is keen to invest in appropriate, clinically led, IT infrastructure to enable these programmes to maximise their complementarity as they represent a huge investment in the services for hearing impaired people and children in particular, where there is need to embrace health, education and family support services.
