Motivation of the parents of hearing impaired children

Saturday May 14th 2005, 11:10am — 11:30am

Prof. Jarmila Radová

Motivations and expectations of parents influence the process of education, social integration and quality of future quality of life of their hearing impaired children.

In our presentation we would like to talk about possible ways how to increase motivation of parents of hearing impaired children to:

1. Actively participate in early diagnosis of deafness
2. Take active part in the system financing of health services, hearing aids, cochlear implants
3. Take active decisions in the process of education of their hearing impaired child (integration possibilities)
4. Support each other (self support groups, fundraising)

In some areas, the support and guidance by the state is necessary (neonatal hearing screening), in others more individual activity and contribution is required (patient support groups, foundations). The international multidisciplinary discussion should help up to reach the optimum balance between the two approaches.
