Influencing Europe
Saturday May 14th 2005, 10:50am — 11:10am
Prof. Hendrik Fehr
Issues of citizens with disabilities are not only a matter of local, regional or national level but more and more (e.g. forthcoming European constitution) on the European agenda.
For many years European NGOs representing and defending the interests of citizens with disabilities have been active "lobbying" in Brussels either directly or via the European Disability Forum.
Hearing impaired persons are actually present with four associations: the European Union of the Deaf (EUD), European Federation of Parents of Hearing Impaired Children (FEPEDA), European Federation of Hard of Hearing (EFHOH) and the European Association of Cochlear Implant Users (EURO-CIU).
The presentation will briefly explain what is the European Cochlear Implant Association about vis a vis the other three actors in this field, outline the necessity, the chances and constraints of influencing European policy makers (Council, European Parliament, Commission, Council of Europe).
What has been achieved? What is the outlook? What is the link between the European NGOs and the national partners? These are questions to be dealt with in the presentation.
