Making Change Happen - consumer representation and role of the voluntary sector

Saturday May 14th 2005, 10:30am — 10:50am

Ms. Susan Daniels

This presentation will address the role of voluntary sector organizations such as the National Deaf Children’s Society, the UK's largest national charity supporting all UK deaf children and families regardless of communication approach and level of deafness. NDCS places the perspective of families at the heart of all lobbying and campaigning work, thereby providing the Society with a unique platform for systemic change.

Focusing on the Society’s dramatically successful Universal New Born Hearing Screening campaign, its work in the promotion of informed choice, current initiatives to respond to the challenges in the supply and training of teachers of the deaf, as well as activity to ensure parents and carers are involved from the outset in the strategic development of services for deaf children and their families, this session will also examine the interface between consumer representation and systemic change. A brief outline of these campaigns will be presented along with an update on research and development work currently underway on a number of other NDCS initiatives to support parents in informed decision making.
