Dr. Branka Mikic MD PhD
The author will give a survey of current status in hearing services for deaf and hard of hearing children in Eastern Europe. Eastern European countries underwent dramatical political and socio-economic changes during last fifteen years, but there are still a lot of problems to be solved in the field of early detection and intervention in hearing impaired children. The situation in Eastern European countries is remarkably diferent regarding economic status and organization of hearing services.
Therefore we have made a Questionnaire for professionals in hearing services in order to obtain reliable “field” information on hearing screening, age of identification of hearing impairment, rehabilitation services, intensity of treatment and funding. There are also some questions regarding financial support for obtaining hearing instruments and cochlear implants for hearing impaired children. The trends in mainstreaming, special schools for deaf and professional support for hearing impaired children enroled in normal schools will be analyzed as well. We have asked hearing professionals to provide suggestions for future development in the field.
Different approaches regarding hearing loss identification and intervention as well as fundraising models in Eastern Europe will be analyzed. The objective is improvement of the chances for mainstreaming and full social integration of hearing impaired people and obtaining logistic and financial support from developed European countries.
