Parents of deaf children: Needs and Expectations
Friday May 13th 2005, 2:00pm — 2:30pm
Prof. Venetta Lampropoulou
Over the last decade we have been studying the effects of deafness on parents and the whole family system. A summary of our major findings will be presented together with a new program of parents’ empowerment that we are presently implementing at the University of Patras throughout Greece.
According to our results, the diagnosis of hearing loss is the most stressful period for parents. In addition deafness seems to affect the whole family system. Communication with the deaf child, obtaining information about deafness and services, making decisions about cochlear implantation, school placement, etc, purchasing hearing and technological aids, working with and financing professionals, facing negative reactions from society are some of the main stressors for parents and family members.
Finally, parents and family members have negative and positive experiences from specialists and specific expectations that will be presented at the conference. The new role of parents as partners in the education and the rehabilitation team will also be discussed together with some issues of training and supporting parents in order to adopt and be effective in this new role.
