In the nineties a sort of revolution changed the way the public opinion thinks about hearing, hearing loss, its effects and patient care. All those who are in the field agree that this was mainly due to the implementation of national – or large scale – newborn hearing screening programmes.
The creation of integrated Hearing Detection and Intervention (HDI) programmes has been greatly accelerated by the development of equipment and protocols as well as by increased level of awareness among clinicians, health authorities, agencies and associations.
This presentation summarizes the basic steps in the relatively recent evolution of HDI programmes, with an emphasis on technological achievements of the past five years or so in screening, diagnosis and intervention and on protocols for the various elements of care. One interesting by-product of the whole process is a measurable increase of the level of quality for the audiological services for adults, in nearly all countries of the European area. Finally, it will be shown that the present status of HDI programmes is also a result of joint European efforts in the field.
