The key purpose of the Sensory Inclusion Service is to provide seamless trans-agency services to children and young people with sensory impairment and their families / carers. Services are provided for children and young people aged 0 to 19+. The advent of neonatal screening and early diagnosis has resulted in the delivery of services from a very early age, giving a long-term positive prognosis in terms of inclusion and quality of life.
The Sensory Inclusion Service provides a wide range of support services in relation to visual impairment, hearing impairment and multi-sensory impairment. The Service has two teams – one for hearing impairment and one for visual impairment. The Hearing Impairment Team employs 11 teachers of the deaf (2 of whom are audiologists), an Audiology Technical Officer and a Resource Officer. All audiological services and support services are provided in a seamless service manner through budget pooling with the NHS. Extensive client consultation exercises have shown that families demand this form of trans-agency service delivery.
In relation to work with young people, detailed emphasis is now being placed by the Sensory Inclusion Service upon the transition process to adult life, to ensure that seamless services continue to be delivered in order to meet the challenges of inclusion and independent living. Virtually all children with hearing impairment attend local schools where most attain or exceed nationally expected levels of attainment – especially at 16.
