Organisation Details
The FOSS was founded in 1973 by groups of parents organised at the special schools for hard of hearing and speech/language disordered children.
It was in the late 1980s that also other parents (for instance of integrated children) could become member of FOSS. Overall, the FOSS represents the parents of about 8,000 children.
This group of speech/language disordered children has been grown very fast in the last 10 – 15 years. The way of educating the hard of hearing children in special school is of great advantage for them. In the special school there is much attention in stimulating the communication, there are speech-trainers and other therapists working at the school, and the range of social and emotional problems are quite similar.
The FOSS has three main aims:
1. To give information. By publishing booklets, leaflets, a magazine, film and so on. The film (video or DVD) is available with English subtitles. Further on, we give information to parents by phone, by e-mail or at meetings.
2. To advise and to lobby in the interest of our parents and children. That means, for instance, to plead in favour of early detection and adequate education.
3. To stimulate the integration of our children in society.
