Organisation Details

The Ear Foundation was established in 1989 to bring cochlear implantation for deaf children to the UK; it has been so successful that now one half of the profoundly deaf children in the UK have cochlear implants.

To fulfil its goals, The Ear Foundation has three main areas of activity:

  • A family centre offering advice, information, support, rehabilitation and accommodation for families of all implanted children;
  • An education and resource centre providing information and training for parents, professionals and the public about cochlear implantation;
  • Research and development facilities to focus on the best ways to maximise the use of cochlear implants in everyday life.

These activities currently include family groups following diagnosis of deafness, family courses on parent/child interaction, a group to help families develop listening skills in everyday life at home, and a group on sign language skills. In addition, there are courses for the children and young people with implants themselves, as they grow up to be independent adults.
