South-West University “Neofit Rilski” is a higher education state institution of modern Bulgaria. It has 7 faculties and a college encompassing social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, techniques and technologies. The degrees offered by the university are specialist, bachelor, master and doctor (PhD).
The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Disorders (SLHD) is part of the Faculty of Philosophy. This is the only one specialized university department in Bulgaria. The professionals at the department have high qualification in the field of etiology, diagnostics and treatment of communication disorders in children and adults. According to the requirements of IALP the department is renewing its programs including courses of modern studies: software techniques for treatment of stuttering (Doctor Fluency), rehabilitation of cochlear implant users (pre- and post lingual deafness), adaptive techniques for educational integration of children with communication disorders, etc.
SLHD offers courses in continuing education for speech-language therapists including new trends in deaf studies. In co-operation with NGOs, selective courses are developed and run for parents, mainstream teachers, and social workers caring for children with communication disorders.
The department is welcoming all initiatives supporting care and education of children and teenagers with speech-language and hearing disorders.
