Organisation Details

Viataal is an organisation for assessment, education and care for children and adults with hearing, speech and language impairments. 1,600 professionals employ their activities for 3,000 children and adults in approximately 20 centres, located in the Southern, Western and Eastern parts of the Netherlands.

In the field of cochlear implantation, Viataal co-operates closely with the university hospital ‘St. Radboud’ in Nijmegen. Together they run the oldest and most elaborated cochlear implant programme in our country. Viataal is responsible for the rehabilitation part, integrated in the early intervention programme for very young deaf children and their families.

Research is an important part of the cochlear implant programme. Currently, we focus on issues such as the effects of the combination of universal newborn hearing screening and cochlear implant, cochlear implants in children with multiple disabilities, reading proficiency in cochlear implanted children and quality of communication and life in cochlear implanted children and youngsters.
