Organisation Details

For more then 150 years, KIDS, has been a centre of excellence for the evaluation of hearing impaired children. It’s located in the east part of Belgium, near Germany and The Netherlands.

Nearly 200 hearing-impaired children and 30 adults are educated or supported by KIDS in early intervention, pre or primary school, vocational training school, boarding house or in a mainstreamed environment. KIDS has also its own centre for the Wellbeing of deaf adults, and houses for deaf adults with additional problems.

KIDS offers a wide range of facilities for children from 0 to 21. It’s our aim to educate our children in such a way that they can find their way in the hearing world but also in the Deaf world. Priority is given to the individual needs of the child and to the choice of the parents. We teach the children to speak and listen as much as possible. But all children have also a minimum of one lesson a week on Sign Language and/or Deaf Culture.

Some of our deaf children are in a mainstreamed environment in their own town. But it’s also possible that they stay in our boarding house and go to a school in the neighbourhood of KIDS. We think it’s important for mainstreamed children to meet their peers.
