Promoting joined-up working for Europe’s professionals with deaf children and their families

Welcome to this major collaborative European meeting, bringing together Europe’s major organisations for deaf and hearing impaired children. The meeting aims to raise the profile of childhood deafness on Europe’s agenda, and to highlight the importance of multi-professional teamwork and support. It will provide a new opportunity to bring together all those concerned with providing services for Europe’s deaf children. The involvement of parent and user groups, professional groups and those involved in planning and allocating resources from every country in Europe is warmly invited.

The meeting takes place under the auspices of three leading voluntary groups in the UK: The Ear Foundation, National Deaf Children’s Society and the Royal National Institute for Deaf People.

We have the full support of major organisations across Europe — make sure that your organisation has registered its support as an associate. The success of the meeting depends on widespread participation across user groups, professions, and countries.

We look forward to welcoming you to this historic meeting in London in May 2005.

What will the meeting achieve?

Hearing services for children are being transformed by the implementation of new born screening programmes and the development of new diagnostic technologies and communication developments. There are challenges for all the professional disciplines involved to provide equitable, high quality services across Europe. This meeting will:

  • Bring together the European organisations of professionals working with deaf children, together with parent groups
  • Promote joined-up working for families, children and young people
  • Share parents’ and young people’s experiences
  • Share examples of good practice
  • Explore the differing perspectives of different agencies
  • Explore the challenges of multi-professional working
  • Promote public awareness of the implications of childhood deafness
  • Promote the interests of deaf children on the EU’s agenda

Who should attend?

The meeting is for all those involved with services for Europe’s deaf and hearing impaired children: organisations and individuals, parents and professionals. It will provide a unique opportunity to share experiences across countries, backgrounds and systems with a common goal of providing high-quality equitable services for Europe’s deaf children.

The course language will be English, with interpretation in British Sign Language and the provision of palantypist.
